PROHEAR 066 Electronic Shooting Earmuffs: quick answers

Protection: NRR 23 dB on the package. A lab figure: NRR explained shows how OSHA reads it.
Power: 2 AAA batteries; up to 300 hours stated.
Hear-through: Quiet sounds are raised up to 4x; loud bangs are cut off by the electronics.
Options: 7 colors plus 3 two-color options, 2 pad types, 3 sets.

The 066 lets you hear a voice at normal volume and stops the shot. Microphones on the cups raise quiet sounds up to 4x. When a loud impulse arrives, the circuit cuts the speakers and the shell, rated NRR 23 dB, carries the protection.

It runs on two AAA cells, rated for up to 300 hours. The cups are low-profile with a cutaway for a stock, and you choose from seven colors, gel pads, a 2-pack, or a set with the RH08 walkie-talkie for hunting partners.

Every shooting & hunting model sits in the PROHEAR selection; the numbers on this page come from the model’s own box and spec sheet.

This is general information about hearing protection, not medical or safety advice. The rating printed on the package, a proper fit and your employer's hearing conservation rules come first; see a doctor or an audiologist about ringing or a change in hearing.

What the public sources say

EPA, 40 CFR Part 211 Subpart B: Hearing Protective Devices. Requires the Noise Reduction Rating on the package, measured to ANSI S3.19-1974, and gives the label range as approximately 0 to 30. Read October 4, 2026.
NIOSH, Reducing Exposure to Lead and Noise at Indoor Firing Ranges (Pub. 2010-113). Measured firearm peaks of 155 to 168 dB and recommends earplugs and earmuffs together at the range. Read October 4, 2026.
NIOSH, Provide Hearing Protection. Notes that earmuffs can interfere with eye protection and some eyeglasses, and suggests plugs and muffs together for 100 dBA and above or for impulse sounds. Read October 4, 2026.
OSHA, 1910.95 Appendix B: Methods for estimating the adequacy of hearing protector attenuation. For A-weighted readings, subtract 7 dB from the NRR; the estimate holds only for a protector that is properly fitted and worn. Read October 4, 2026.

How much noise does the PROHEAR 066 Electronic Shooting Earmuffs block?

Its Noise Reduction Rating is 23 dB, measured in a lab to ANSI S3.19-1974. On a real head a muff usually blocks less than the lab figure: OSHA subtracts 7 dB from the NRR when noise is measured in dBA, and NIOSH now recommends checking the protection each wearer actually gets. Our NRR guide walks through both.

Can you hear people talk while wearing the PROHEAR 066 Electronic Shooting Earmuffs?

Yes, that is what the electronics are for: microphones on the cups raise quiet sounds up to 4x, and a loud impulse such as a shot is cut off before it reaches the speaker.
