PROHEAR 038 Passive Earmuffs for Mowing: quick answers

Protection: NRR 28 dB on the package. A lab figure: NRR explained shows how OSHA reads it.
Power: No battery: passive cups and foam do the work.
Options: 5 colors.

The 038 is the muff to keep by the garage door: passive, rated NRR 28 dB, 7.3 oz, and folded small enough for a drawer. Nothing to charge, so it works the first Saturday of spring.

If it feels tight at first, stretch the band over its case for a couple of days. Five colors, at the lowest price of any earmuff we make.

Every work & bluetooth model sits in the PROHEAR catalog; the numbers on this page come from the model’s own box and spec sheet.

This is general information about hearing protection, not medical or safety advice. The rating printed on the package, a proper fit and your employer's hearing conservation rules come first; see a doctor or an audiologist about ringing or a change in hearing.

What the public sources say

EPA, 40 CFR Part 211 Subpart B: Hearing Protective Devices. Requires the Noise Reduction Rating on the package, measured to ANSI S3.19-1974, and gives the label range as approximately 0 to 30. Read October 4, 2026.
OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.95 Occupational noise exposure. Sets 90 dBA over eight hours as the limit, starts a hearing conservation program at 85 dBA, caps impulse noise at 140 dB peak and has employers offer a choice of protectors. Read October 4, 2026.
OSHA, 1910.95 Appendix B: Methods for estimating the adequacy of hearing protector attenuation. For A-weighted readings, subtract 7 dB from the NRR; the estimate holds only for a protector that is properly fitted and worn. Read October 4, 2026.
NIOSH, About Occupational Hearing Loss. Recommends 85 dBA as the exposure limit and says noise-induced hearing loss is permanent but nearly always preventable. Read October 4, 2026.

How much noise does the PROHEAR 038 Passive Earmuffs for Mowing block?

Its Noise Reduction Rating is 28 dB, measured in a lab. On a real head a muff usually blocks less than the lab figure: OSHA subtracts 7 dB from the NRR when noise is measured in dBA, and NIOSH now recommends checking the protection each wearer actually gets. Our NRR guide walks through both.
